I spent the New Year in Paris with my family, and one thing that has stuck with me since I returned is that everywhere we went, we were surrounded by profound beauty. Parisians have a sophisticated sense of style, and Paris is a city that leaves me awestruck. So much beauty in one place. The Sein River runs 485 miles from Dijon to the English Channel and inspired impressionist paintings by Monet and Renoir. It also supplies about half of the water used in Paris. But almost every other beautiful attribute in Paris is man-made. The architecture. The art. The city planning. The museums. The monuments. The history.
What stayed with me during this trip was the sense of taste and style of the people.
Parisians take the time to get dressed and think about how they present themselves. I didn’t see anyone looking like they had just jumped out of bed. They were deliberate in their dress. And their sophisticated sense of style set the tone on the street, which flowed into the retail stores, restaurants, and clubs.
As a salesman, I’ve learned that I should never judge wealth by outfit. I sold a $20M apartment once to a man who wore flip-flops – even at the closing. But there’s much to be said about appearances and how they project our brand and sense of style.
Dogs look like their owners, don’t they?
Great artist dress on brand with their art. So do great architects.
