Excellence > Perfectionism

I feel like people are feeling overwhelmed right now, in general. They feel overwhelmed with life, work, kids, fitness – you name it.

Agents are worried about executing their fall sales plans or making them or being mad at themselves for never making one at all.

Mortgage professionals are concerned about rising interest rates, limited inventory, and increasing foreclosures.
Real estate attorneys are facing new regulatory complexities, slower transaction volumes, and a growing risk of AI replacing their jobs.

Developers just stay overwhelmed.

This business is driven by a million factors beyond our control. And for those of us who like to be in control (hand raised), this is a real problem.  But I’ve heard a few things recently that gave me pause, and even a little peace.

The first came from a Mel Robbins podcast. Her guest, Emma Grede, a wildly successful self-made businesswoman, made a statement that stopped me in my tracks: the difference between excellence and perfection lies in who sets the standard.

Excellence is self driven. You decide what it looks like. You choose how it's measured. Perfection is driven by others. You decide, but you feel judged by everyone else’s yardstick. Excellence is inward. Perfection is outward.

That’s a liberating distinction.

Because it means you get to decide the effort, the standard, the bar for what “good” looks like in your life.

It is so easy in the business to chase the big deal or lament the lost ones. The best and worst part about this job is the same...no one is giving you a playbook. Each day, you have to get up and make your own. And when you are in the zone, there is no greater feeling. And when you are not, you are just sitting by yourself thinking, “What the fuck do I do now?”  That freedom to create our own success comes with the responsibility to continually create it. And it can be absolutely exhausting, or exhilarating, depending on where you are.

When you are overwhelmed, focus on what truly matters. Start every day with the fundamentals. What are the 5 things I am going to do today? What does excellence look like for each one?

If I go to a showing, I will make it the best one ever. I will be on time, well-dressed, organized, and knowledgeable about the building.

If I am doing a pitch, I will have it ready to go, beautifully done and presented with thought and care. If I meet with a client, I will be attentive, responsive, and prepared.

Why?

Not because anyone else is keeping score. Because I am.
Define what excellence looks like to you, and then go do it.
Stop waiting around for the perfect time.
Stop worrying about how it will look.
Stop making excuses.

Excellence isn’t complicated. Focus on what you can control. Do those things well. Let the rest fall away. Perfectionism will be the death of us all.

I am writing this today more to myself than to anyone else, but I hope it helps.

Let’s do this.
